YA Shifter Fantasy Romance Curse of the Moon is an urban paranormal set in our Virginia Mountains. From the blurb: ‘The bad news? Morgan Daniel’s wolf is out of control. The good news? There’s a treatment. She just has to get a potion from a lizard shifter witch—without looking into the witch’s eyes. Easy, right?’

The lizard shifting witch in the story is drawn from mountain people lore about an old woman who basks in the moonlight as a large lizard. They call her the Lizard Lady. According to the tale, she’s been spotted not that far from where we live on a farm in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. I first heard about the Lizard Lady from late valley historian and author, John Heatwole, who interviewed valley/mountain people and recorded their accounts in his book, Shenandoah Voices. He also had a radio show, and that’s the first time I heard about The Lizard Lady. She caught my imagination, but it’s taken me about twenty years to bring her to life.

Old Home in the Blue Ridge Mountains

In Curse of the Moon, her name is Lilith Dubois, and she lives in a ramshackle house back in the mountains. Not only is she a lizard shifter in the moonlight, she’s a witch with memorizing eyes. If you gaze into their green depths, she’ll put a spell on you that only she can break—for a price. This sort of enchantress is called a gorgon. Bad things happen if you look into their eyes. The legendary Medusa turned people to stone. Lilith just gets what she wants from them. She has two teenage daughters, Eve and Dilly, who are important in the story/series. The girls have powers of their own.

The house I based Lilith’s rustic home on is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Many locals know this place because they drive past it. In Curse of the Moon, you have to hike back to Lilith’s hollow or drive as near as you can in a pickup or four wheeler—rough road.

YA Fantasy Romance-Book 2

The Mountain people and Native American lore, plus my love of shifters, herbs, colonial America, and wild imagination are all part of the inspiration behind my new fantasy/paranormal series, The Secret Warrior.

***Winner (or winners) for the kindle/eBook of Curse of the Moon will be chosen from among those who leave me kind comments. If I’m feeling particularly generous I may include the other two books in the series. Yes, you do need to read them in order.

Autumn Inspiration Behind The Panther Moon #YA #Shifter #Fantasy #Romance

tree-from-autumn-drive-jpg1On a blustery October day last fall, Hubby Dennis, daughter Elise, and I took a drive through our vivid countryside. What we call ‘dust devils’ snatched up red and yellow leaves, whipping them around in mini cyclones.  Everywhere I looked, whirlwinds tossed and twirled, hopping from place to place. I imagined Morgan Daniel, the wolf shifter heroine of The Secret Warrior Series, further mastering her use of the elements. She’s far more than a shifter, with other unplumbed powers. She’d already learned to use fire. Time she harnessed the wind, I decided. And that’s how she got her start. As blustery as it is in the valley, the wind nearly always blows in the mountains, the setting  for The Secret Warrior Series.

And then there are the coyote shifters in the series. These were inspired by the toe-curling cries from the roving band of coyotes who visit the hills and fields on and around our farm. I thought, ‘Why not?’  If wolves can shift, why not other creatures. I already had bearwalkers, from a story shared with me by a Shawnee sub-chief. More of a belief, really.

Inspiration is all around me. I never know from where it may arise, or when. But I am tuned in to all the possibilities.

YA Fantasy Romance-Book 3

Excerpt from The Panther Moon:

One after the other, coyote shifters took shape around her and Jimmy. A whirl, and there they were—appearing without sound, camouflaged like chameleons. Not a wolf trick she’d mastered. Maybe she should. Fast. The devils slunk closer.

Corn silk hair like Eve’s blew in the stiff breezes, and various shades of red and brown. Males and females sported loose lengths flapping in the wind, dreadlocks, ponytails, and shaved heads. There must have been at least a dozen sinewy forms, dressed in earthen tones or shadowy black.

Cunning eyes fixed on Morgan, barely giving Jimmy a glance. Emboldened men and lean, mean women stalked nearer, their coyote musk obnoxious to her wolf self. They weren’t armed. ‘Go for the throat’ must be their attack mode.

Should she shift? Only partly. A wolf couldn’t use weapons or catch the next vortex. Not that she’d swirl away and leave Jimmy behind. Besides the need to protect him, she was a warrior. Her duty lay in defending Wapicoli territory.

How stupid to let herself get trapped in the first place! Hadn’t Jackson warned her a lone wolf was a dead wolf?~

Blurb for The Panther Moon:

Being the seventh Morcant has its perks: Morgan is learning to fly and wield magical blue fire. But the coyote shifters are growing bolder. Mateo and his panthers seem impossible to defeat. And vampires aren’t real – are they? When the elusive and enigmatic Chief Okema disappears and the wards protecting the Wapicoli territory falter, Morgan and Jackson are forced into the role of leaders. Badly outnumbered and outgunned, do they have time to search for the secret of the Divining Tree, and will it help them in the final battle?

The Secret Warrior Series is available as a set at Amazon in Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Warrior-3-Book/dp/B01M1OJNYL

Also available from all other online booksellers. Amazon has the second two books in the series in print. Book one is only in kindle because it’s shorter.

New Release! The Panther Moon -The Secret Warrior Series- #YAFantasy #Romance

The creative pursuit of what might be has taken me on amazing and unexpected journeys. If someone told me several years ago that I would create a Young Adult fantasy romance series with wolf shifters and other fantastical creatures and characters, I would’ve been mightily surprised. I began fiction writing in historical romance. Then ghosts appeared, and ‘The door to nowhere’ opened–a portal in time–and a bearwalking Shawnee Warrior growled to life. Add some magic, a dash of sci-fi/fantasy, and the next thing I know, I’m on the engrossing path to Wapicoli Lodge. Given all of this, I must admit the seeds of The Secret Warrior Series were sown long before I undertook this adventure.

misty autumn mountain road

These writing journeys remind me of the wonderful quote from The Lord of the Rings: “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien

I never know where I may be swept off to in my imagination. Undertaking a new series in a new genre is definitely a potentially dangerous business. I’ve entered uncharted territory. Whether or not this series meets with approval, I have loved every step of the journey. If you enjoy the stories, please leave them a kind review, and yes, you need to read them in order.

Misty autumn woods

I can’t share the third book in a series without touching on the series itself, and the whys behind it. Passion, knowledge, and various influences lie at the heart of The Secret Warrior Series. My love of history, mystery, sci-fi/fantasy, and fascination with the mountain people and Native Americans ignited a wildfire of ideas. Some episodes of Monster Quest drew my attention to how many supposed creatures inhabit the Alleghenies–including werewolves and space aliens. The series Grimm explores the hidden world among us…These all deepened my pondering.

On an autumn drive into the Alleghenies, it struck me how easily anything could hide in these rugged ridges. And Fort Valley, called Hidden Valley in The Secret Warrior Series, is tucked in the Massanutten Mountain Range, truly off the beaten path. Getting back there involved the most hair-raising drive over a mountain I’ve ever experienced–depicted in the beginning of The Hunter’s Moon (Book 1, The Secret Warrior Series). The ascent is so steepI was certain our pickup would flip over backwards. The curves are also a nightmare. But it was an inspiring trek, one I never would have written the story without. Those of you who fear the wilderness is disappearing, it’s still out there. Trust me.

the Allegheny Mountains toward Reddish Knob(Image of the Allegheny Mountains by my mom, Pat Churchman.)

Living in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia surrounded by mountains veiled in mist and mystery was perfect creating the characters and setting for this series. Some characters are based on lore I’ve learned over the years—lore some folk swear is true. Others appeared to me, as characters have a way of doing. Out of the mist. Even though the series is fantasy, a great deal of research went into it. Everything I write, whether fantasy, paranormal, time travel, or straight historical, has its roots in the well-researched past.

In Book 1, The Hunter’s Moon, 17-year-old Morgan Daniel begins this journey much as I did, in ignorance. She must learn about the strange world she’s entered, and the bizarre, but vital, role she’s destined to play. The meeting between her and alpha shifter Jackson Wapicoli sets off sparks, but when the curse she’s lived her entire life unaware of is revealed, the learning curve is mind-blowing. Good thing Morgan has guts and a lot of support. And then there’s the prophecy…

The Panther Moon -- YA paranormal fantasy romanceAbout THE PANTHER MOON, BOOK 3, THE SECRET WARRIOR SERIES:

Wolf shifter, Morgan Daniel, faces formidable odds, along with hot alpha leader, Jackson, her genius brother, Jimmy, and their inventive pack. Together, this unconventional band rocks. But will they be strong enough to battle Armageddon? If they’re not, evil grows. And how. It will take everything Morgan, Jackson, and their pack have, and MORE, to prevail over the mounting forces against them.

If you like a kick-ass heroine, Morgan is for you. She also has a tender side, vital in a shifter with her growing powers. And alpha leader Jackson is sizzling.

Praise for The Hunter’s Moon: (From Goodreads)

“I laughed out loud many times. The writing was engaging, interesting, informative and humorous. It was narrated in first person by Morgan, so I got insight into how she felt through all the revelations. Admittedly, she handled things a lot better than I would have, but it wasn’t so unbelievable that I was removed from the story at any point. If anything, it kept the pacing nice and quick!” ~Dani Reviews Things

“Beth Trissel does a great job with these characters. She has a good amount of details in this story. The more you read, the more you find out about the world she had created. I have always loved stories where you have a little mystery. If I get the chance to read the second book to this series I would. I’m dying to learn what is going to happen next with Morgan, Jackson and Jimmy. If you like YA fantasy romance, wolves, and a little mystery. I think you would like this book.” ~Zara Lethallan for The Bohemian Housewife

****

This story had the romance of young love, the adventure of the shifters and the suspense of the Panteras looking for them. I couldn’t put this book down. I look forward to seeing what happens next in this adventure for Morgan and her brother.

I highly recommend this story.” ~Mary Ann Clarkson (Mistress Mary’s Book Lair)

CURSE OF THE MOON, BOOK 2, THE SECRET WARRIOR SERIES:

Resized Curse of the Moon.jpg1In Curse of the Moon, Book 2, The Secret Warrior Series, Morgan Daniel is coming into her inheritance, or curse, with many challenges. Hot alpha shifter Jackson, her genius kid brother, and a growing pack they dub ‘the fellowship’ back her up with moral and hands on support. And some really great ideas…

BLURB: The bad news? Morgan Daniel’s wolf is out of control. The good news? There’s a treatment. She just has to get a potion from a lizard shifter witch–without looking into the witch’s eyes. Easy, right? But when the witch puts a spell on her younger brother, Morgan has to do the witch’s bidding to save him.

Fortunately Morgan isn’t alone. She has Jackson to lean on, a few witches coming into their powers, a secret warlock, and the always mysterious Chief Okema. What could possibly go wrong?

Right?~

The Panther Moon -- YA paranormal fantasy romanceBook 3, The Secret Warrior Series, is out in pre-order. The Panther Moon was a joy to write. I grieved when I finished. The series was enormous fun, challenging me as an author.

Will I write another in the series, you may ask? Maybe. I have ideas, but I was signed for three books and have completed the full moon circle. If the series does well, then you can expect more.

Some Whys Behind YA Fantasy Series ‘The Secret Warrior’

Resized Curse of the Moon.jpg1I’m not a one genre author, possibly because I’m too ADD to stick with a single category or era. No, seriously.  I’m multi-published in historical, ghostly, paranormal, time travel romance, and some nonfiction. YA (Young Adult) is my latest venture. I love writing this genre.

Daughter Elise and several nieces encouraged me to take the YA plunge, so thank or blame them. 🙂

The Secret Warrior is a YA fantasy/paranormal (with romance) series set present-day in our Virginia Mountains. Native American and mountain people lore, my love of herbs, colonial America, and my wild imagination are part of the inspiration behind the series. Shawnee warrior/wolf shifters, witches, a warlock, the Star People, and other characters, shifters, and creatures run through the stories. And there’s the prophecy…

The lizard shifting witch is drawn from mountain people lore about an old woman who basks in the moonlight as a large lizard. They call her the Lizard Lady. In the story, her name is Lilith Dubois, and she lives in a ramshackle old house back in the hollow in the mountains. Not only is she a lizard shifter in the moonlight, she’s a witch with memorizing eyes. If you gaze into their green depths, she can put a spell on you that only she can break. This sort of enchantress is called a gorgon. Bad things happen if you look into their eyes. Tough not to do.

(Old mountain home that inspired her house in the story. Image by hubby.)

old house where lizard lady lives

One of the most unusual creatures I’ve brought to life is the thunderbird, a mythological bird based on Native American lore. There are people, of course, who insist the bird is real. Check out YouTube, or MonsterQuest. Since I couldn’t conclusively prove its existence, I took characteristics from Native American lore and added a few of my own, like it hunts only at dusk and during storms. The legendary bird gets its name from the belief that the beating of its great wings account for the booms of thunder, and its flashing red eyes are the lighting. Pretty darn awesome. Likely, the thunderbird derives from NA respect for the bald eagle and is a greatly exaggerated version. I featured a big territorial male in book 1, The Hunter’s Moon. The bird comes up again in Curse of the Moon in the form of an incubating egg.

Royalty free image of Thunderbird.jpg1

What could be better than hatching and training a thunderbird yourself? It’s the Native American dragon. Thunderbirds are said to be intelligent, powerful, and wrathful, so you definitely want one on your side. In Curse of the Moon, Morgan’s younger brother, Jimmy, plans to train and fly a thunderbird. He’s a fearless kid.

Blurb for Curse of the Moon (Book 2, The Secret Warrior Series):

But when the witch puts a spell on her younger brother, Morgan has to do the witch’s bidding to save him.

Fortunately Morgan isn’t alone. She has Jackson to lean on, a few witches coming into their powers, a secret warlock, and the always mysterious Chief Okema. What could possibly go wrong?~

Up next, The Panther Moon. Release Date TBD.
